Precautions

Contraindications for moxibustion:

  1. The face, precordial region, major blood vessels and joints, ciliary body area, nipples, and external genitalia; areas with thin skin and sparse muscle tissue, as well as the junctions between tendons and muscles.
  2. Heatstroke, hypertensive crisis, massive hemoptysis due to advanced pulmonary tuberculosis, and the like.
  3. The lower back and lower abdomen of pregnant women and women during their menstrual period.
  4. Patients with purpura, post-cesarean hypertrophic scarring in women, skin and mucosal lesions, those allergic to moxibustion, patients with reduced thermal sensitivity, and individuals with implanted cardiac pacemakers.
  5. Extreme fatigue, hunger, fullness, intoxication, sweating, and emotional instability, among others.
  6. Skin infectious diseases, febrile seizures, coma or extreme physical exhaustion, osteoporosis, and the like.
  7. Individuals who lack self-control or suffer from mental illness, among others.

Precautions for moxibustion:

  1. Individuals considering moxibustion therapy should avoid undergoing the treatment on an empty stomach or immediately after a heavy meal. It is best to wait at least half an hour after eating before receiving moxibustion. When the stomach is empty, the body’s qi and blood are deficient, making it difficult to fully absorb the warming and heating energy from external sources, and increasing the likelihood of experiencing discomfort such as dizziness during the procedure.
Overeating can slow the flow of qi and blood, thereby leading to abdominal distension.
Individuals with gastrointestinal disorders should avoid eating during moxibustion treatment and should wait at least 30 minutes after the session before consuming a meal.
  2. Drink 200–300 milliliters of warm boiled water before and after moxibustion. During the moxibustion session, avoid or minimize consumption of cold and cooling foods, such as watermelon, bananas, crab, cold beverages, and various herbal cooling teas. If you feel hungry during moxibustion, you may eat a small amount of easily digestible food, but do not overeat.
  3. During and after moxibustion, it is essential to avoid exposure to wind-cold and to keep the body warm, particularly the neck, lower back, abdomen, and feet. During the procedure, the heat may cause the body’s pores to open, making it even more important to maintain warmth in order to prevent pathogenic cold from invading the body.
  4. Within four hours after moxibustion, avoid showering, washing your hands with cold water, drinking cold beverages, and consuming cold or cooling foods, including fruits. This is especially important in winter, when you should also avoid contact with cold water.
  5. Women should avoid moxibustion during menstruation, unless they experience dysmenorrhea, delayed menstruation, or excessively light menstrual flow; in such cases, they may consult a qualified practitioner to select appropriate acupoints for moxibustion. If a woman normally has heavy menstrual flow, it is best to refrain from moxibustion during her period to prevent excessive bleeding or prolonged menstruation; however, if her menstrual flow is typically light or if she has menstrual problems related to cold and dampness, moxibustion may be considered.
  6. It is normal to experience menstrual irregularities—such as earlier or later periods, or excessively heavy or light flow—for a period of time after moxibustion treatment; typically, menstruation will return to normal on its own within one to two months.
  7. During moxibustion, one should avoid getting angry, as anger leads to qi stagnation, which can obstruct the meridians, impair the therapeutic effects of moxibustion, and even exacerbate blood stasis.
  8. If blisters develop during moxibustion, small blisters will gradually resolve over time and require no special treatment; however, if large blisters occur, they should first be disinfected with a needle and then punctured, after which the fluid inside should be carefully aspirated with a cotton swab, taking care to prevent infection. Subsequently, the local area should be closely monitored, and contact with water should be avoided to prevent infection.
